Understand the seller's motivation

One of the simplest due diligence questions is also one of the most revealing.

Why is the seller exiting now?

The answer could tell you a lot about what you're taking on.

Someone who's selling to start a new company or focus on a bigger project is very different from someone who feels burned out or is watching subscriber growth stall.

Ask directly about their motivation and timeframe to sell. Then pay attention to how keen they are to close the deal.  If they're pushing for a quick sale, dig deeper into what might be driving that urgency.

A seller wanting a fast sale isn't always a red flag, but it's better to know the reason.

Also, find out if they've tried to sell the newsletter before. Sometimes a failure to sell simply means the right buyer wasn't around.

Other times, a buyer did their homework, found something they didn't like, and walked away.

Understanding what happened before you came along gives you a clearer picture of what you're walking into.

You'll be glad you took the time to find out.

NEWSLETTER MONETIZATION TIP

Earn recruiting kickbacks

I read two newsletters that regularly post job opportunities in their niche. Here's one example from an SEO newsletter:

The idea is to partner with 2 to 3 recruiters who hire in your niche. This works best in niches where hiring is competitive because recruiters often rely on referrals to source and place these people.

Instead of charging for "job board" listings, you agree on a referral fee when someone from your audience gets hired.

A typical arrangement might look like this:

  • The recruiter shares a few roles that match your audience

  • You feature them occasionally, e.g., “Roles you might like”

  • Interested readers click through to apply (track clicks with a custom link).

  • If someone is hired, you receive a referral payment. Fees can be $500 to $3,000+

Start by reaching out to recruiting firms or independent recruiters in your space and pitch this as a partnership that benefits everyone.

The math works great. One placement every quarter = $2,000-12,000 per year.

Will you try this? Hit reply and tell me "Yes" or "No."
