NEWSLETTER SELLING TIP
Explain your churn rate
Churn in newsletters is typically measured as the percentage of subscribers who unsubscribe over a set period, usually per month.Β
The standard formula is: (Lost Subscribers / Total Subscribers at Start) Γ 100.
What counts as βacceptableβ depends on the type of newsletter and how fast it's growing, but there are some rough benchmarks buyers and operators use.
Typical monthly churn ranges:
1β2% per month: Very healthy. This usually signals strong audience fit and consistent value.
2β3% per month: Still solid and common for many newsletters.
3β5% per month: Acceptable but worth monitoring. Growth must outpace churn.
5%+ per month: A potential warning sign, unless the list is growing very quickly.
Buyers care more about net subscriber growth than raw churn. If you're losing 5% monthly but adding 8%, that's healthy growth. If you're losing 3% but only adding 2%, that's a problem.
They also want to understand why people churn.Β
Are unsubscribes happening after the first month (poor onboarding/expectation mismatch) or after 12+ months (natural lifecycle)?
If your churn is higher than industry averages, be prepared to explain it and ideally show what you've tested to improve it.Β
Buyers appreciate awareness and problem-solving more than perfect metrics.

This week, more big news: OpenAI has quietly stepped into media by acquiring TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a fast-growing Silicon Valley livestream talk show hosted by founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays for reportedly βlow hundreds of millions of dollars.β
The deal signals that OpenAI isnβt just building AI tools, itβs also trying to shape the narrative around AI in real time, using TBPNβs influential founder-and-investor audience to influence how the tech industry talks about artificial intelligence, according to Axios.
Congratulations to all parties involved!
