NEWSLETTER BUYING TIP
Your First 30 Days After Buying a Newsletter
You signed. The list is yours. Now what?
The instinct is to start changing things. Resist it. Here is what the first month should actually look like.
Week one: touch nothing. Read the last three months of issues. Watch how the audience replies. Learn the voice before you change a word of it. The fastest way to spook a list is to sound like a different person overnight.
Get the seller to introduce you. The handover note should come from them, not you. A short email in their voice, telling readers the newsletter is in safe hands and nothing they love is going away, hands their trust straight to you. Nothing you send cold will do that. Line it up before the deal closes and make it a term of the sale.
Read the numbers that matter. Not vanity opens. Look at the open rate trend over the last ten issues, the links people actually click, any unsubscribe spikes, and how many readers reply. The spikes tell you what the audience does not want. The replies tell you who they are, so answer every one of them. That is how an inherited list starts to feel like yours.
Use your seller while you still can. Most handover periods are 30 days. Ask the awkward questions now: Which sponsors renew? Which posts flopped, what they would have done next. Once that window closes, it closes.
Find the one lever, then wait. Every newsletter has a thing the previous owner never got around to. A monetization slot left empty. A welcome sequence that stops after one email. Find that one thing, change it, then leave everything else alone and watch it for three weeks. Pull ten levers at once and you'll never know which one moved the numbers.
One change, three weeks, then the next. That is how you learn what actually works on this list instead of guessing.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY NEWSLETTER COPILOT:

I used to work with Juliet. She's one of the sharpest people on newsletters I know, with years of experience and the judgment that only comes from having done the work.
That's what her new service, Newsletter-Copilot, is built on.
It's for anyone running a newsletter and stuck on a decision they're not sure how to make:
Touch the subject lines, or leave them?
Keep that sponsor, or drop it?
What do you fix first?
She works through all of it with you, whether you've run your letter for years or just bought one.
Having someone in your corner who knows newsletters that well feels amazing, especially on the days it's all on you.
If that's you, she's the one you need!
