MARKET NOTE
The way newsletters make money is shifting, and it changes what's worth buying.
Beehiiv's own 2026 data shows paid subscriptions have gone from roughly 30% to about 85% of creator revenue on the platform in two years, and the share of publishers earning through paid subs doubled, from 15% to 30%. Ads still matter. But the growth is in money that comes straight from readers.
The catch: the median newsletter still converts under 1% of its readers to paid. So a list with a paid tier that already works is worth far more than one that's never tried. That gap is precisely what to look for when you're buying.
THE PLAYBOOK
How Do You Actually Value a Newsletter?
It comes down to one question first, and most people skip it: are you valuing an audience, or a business? Get that right, and the rest falls into place.
Two methods, and the right one depends on that answer. Little or no revenue? You're buying the audience itself, so value the list. Real, steady revenue? You're buying a business, so value the cash flow.
Method 1: per active subscriber. Use it when revenue is minimal or patchy. Roughly: active subscribers, times a niche rate (finance commands more than, say, travel), times an adjustment for how the list was built and how well it engages.
The catch that trips everyone up: "active subscribers" is not the headline count. It's the people actually being sent to and opening. A list can claim 24,000 and really reach 10,000. Value the engaged base, not the vanity number.
Method 2: the revenue multiple. Use it when revenue's held steady over several consistent months. Roughly: average monthly revenue, times twelve, times a multiple. The multiple reflects the niche, the growth, and how durable that revenue really is.
So the first move isn't maths, it's classification. Audience asset, or business asset? Get that right and you're holding the correct tool. Get it wrong and even perfect maths hands you the wrong number.
