NEWSLETTER BUYING TIP
What you can actually buy at each price tier
A lot of buyers come in with a budget in mind but no real sense of what it gets them. Here’s what each tier actually buys in today’s market.
Under $10K. Mostly small newsletters and pre-revenue assets. Often passion projects from founders who built something interesting but haven’t monetized it much yet. With the right monetization plan or an audience to bring in, the upside can be real. A great entry point if you want to learn the dynamics of running a newsletter or an alternative to paid ads.
$10K to $50K. The sweet spot for most first-time buyers. You’ll find newsletters with real engagement and light revenue, with real room to grow. You’ll also find newsletters with bigger audiences that simply haven’t been fully monetized yet, which is more common than most people realize. Most operators who reach this tier are ready to sell because they want to start something new, not because the business is failing.
$50K to $200K. Established assets with proven revenue, usually multiple monetization lines (sponsorships, affiliates, sometimes paid tiers). Less upside than the lower tier, but more stability. Best for operators who have time to put in and want a stable starting point.
$200K to $1M. Multi-revenue-stream businesses, often with a small team or regular freelancers. You’re not just buying an audience, you’re buying an operation. Diligence matters more here. So does your ability to run a real team.
Over $1M. Strategic acquisitions and portfolio plays. Usually for buyers with existing media businesses or institutional capital. Often paired with earnouts or the seller staying on for a period.
A few things that change between tiers, and that buyers often underestimate:
The type of buyer. Sub-$10K is solo first-timers. $50K to $200K is serious operators. Over $1M is institutional or strategic.
The diligence load. A $10K deal might close in two weeks. A $500K deal often takes three to six months.
The seller’s involvement post-close. The bigger the deal, the more likely the seller is staying on in some form.
If you’re not sure yet, lean into the $10K to $50K range for a first acquisition. That’s where the most engaged sellers are, and the deals tend to close faster than people expect.
Tell me what tier you’re shopping in. I’ll share what’s been moving fast in that range.
What's your real budget for your next acquisition?

ACQUISITION NEWS
From $300M to $10M in four years
Earlier this month, crypto research and media company Messari was acquired by Blockworks for just over $10 million.
Four years ago, Messari was valued at $300 million in its 2022 Series B.
A reminder that what a company is worth on paper and what someone actually pays for it can be very different numbers.
Congratulations to all parties involved!
The smartest founders never pick their own 3PL.
Researching 3PLs yourself feels responsible. It's how you end up with a great sales pitch and a bad fit. There are over 2,800 of them, and the right one rarely markets the loudest. Here's why the founders who hand off the search get better answers, faster.
