Hey there 👋
Happy Monday!
I often look at specific data on LetterTrader out of curiosity, and today, I pulled this year's numbers for the number of conversations it takes to sell a newsletter, see below.
Let’s get into it!
Cheers,
HOW MANY CONVERSATIONS DOES IT TAKE TO SELL A NEWSLETTER?
People picture selling a newsletter as this big, drawn-out thing, dozens of tyre-kickers, endless back-and-forth. The data says otherwise.
Looking at the deals on LetterTrader this year, the average listing gets about three buyer conversations. Not thirty. Three. And the ones that sell usually close on one or two serious offers, not a bidding war.
What that tells you: a sale isn't about volume, it's about fit. You don't need a crowd. You need the right buyer to show up and the numbers to make sense to them. Most of those conversations are quick, a few questions, a feel for whether it's a match, then either an offer or a polite pass.
For sellers, that's reassuring: you're not signing up for months of noise. A clean listing with honest numbers tends to attract a couple of genuinely interested people, and one of them is often enough.
For buyers, it's a nudge: the serious ones ask a few real questions and make a fair offer. You don't need to lowball ten listings and hope. Pick the one that fits, have the conversation, move.
Every newsletter has its buyer. Usually, it only takes a few conversations to find them.
I've been digging through our numbers a lot lately, and there's plenty more where this came from. Reply and tell me what you'd want me to pull next: average sale prices, what buyers ask most, which niches move fastest, whatever you're curious about. I'll share it in a future issue.
