Hey there 👋

Happy Monday!

A couple of weeks ago, my open rate dropped 10 points overnight. Same sender, same day, same list, nothing changed. It was a little scary, honestly. But what I found when I dug in flipped the whole thing on its head. Full story below.

PS: We've been working on plenty of audits, so plenty of new newsletters are coming for sale next week.

Let’s get into it!

Cheers,

THE WEEK MY OPEN RATE TANKED

Quick confession. A couple of weeks ago my open rate dropped about 10 points, seemingly overnight. If you're buying or selling newsletters, what I found next is worth knowing.

My first thought was the scary one: had my readers checked out? So I looked past the opens, at the clicks. And here's the twist, the clicks had actually gone up. Fewer "opens," but more people clicking, reading, and engaging across the whole issue. My real audience wasn't shrinking. If anything, it was more active than ever.

So what dropped? The way opens get counted. Open rate is measured by a tiny invisible pixel that loads when your email renders. Apple auto-loads it, previews load it, inbox images load it. But when an email slips into a tab like Gmail's Promotions, those pixels often don't fire, so the "opens" vanish, even though the readers are still right there.

So why did mine slip? Honestly, my recent issues had started sounding a little too salesy, packed with listings, prices, and "deals." That's exactly what nudges an email out of the inbox and into the Promotions tab. My readers hadn't changed; my emails had just started looking like ads.

And that's the real lesson, the one we come back to every time we value a newsletter: no single number tells the whole story. Open rate alone would've had me thinking my list was dying. Clicks told the opposite. It's only when you look at the full picture, opens, clicks, replies, revenue, growth, churn, where the subscribers came from, that you see what a newsletter is really worth.

It's exactly how we value here. We never price a list off one stat. We look at a whole set of signals together, because any one of them on its own can lie. The truth lives in the combination.

So whether you're buying or selling: don't let one metric make or break a deal. Zoom out. The whole picture is the only one that tells the truth.

👇 THE ANSWER

Future Blueprint sold for $110,000. If you guessed lower, you're in good company, back in August most of you valued a big AI list at $30–75K. But the right buyer saw what the metrics alone don't: a 304,000-strong, engaged AI audience is worth more than its monthly revenue suggests. Which is exactly this week's lesson, the whole picture beats any single number.
